After a closer look, the main gist here is that these people hate America for not hating gays so much that they’re going to hate on dead troops and their families at the troops funerals. Can you imagine anything that combines several levels of hating on people so creatively? Plus it’s offensive — to gays, troops, gay troops… oh, and America too. We’d see them on TV sometimes picketing about something, but never totally got it and wrote them off as religious fundamentalists who were pretty much confined to middle America — certainly nothing for us to worry about here in Rhode Island… until now!

They’re going to visit Brown, the State House, and a ton of Jewish places including the Holocaust Museum — which oughta go over greeeaaat. Actually that’s the point — if all this goes over anything less than absolutely horribly or just not at all, we’ll be entirely disillusioned with Rhode Island and leave forever just like Chris Harris! You know????
In the past, the God Hates Fags people usually go after fallen soldiers’ families, you know, when they’re already upset and crying and shit — so who’s going to get all up in their faces then? Nobody wants to fuck up their kid’s funeral any further, right? So when these people get on the Nightly News for being ridiculous, nobody gets filmed reacting to their bullshit. Oh can we please! Let’s call it a “Pride Warm-Up Pre-Show”! We can get a DJ and some male strippers, and since it’s Friday we can all take off work and have a dance party at the State House! Nobody will even know those insane people are there! We think that as long as we’re dancing, it’s legally the same as picketing so nobody gets in trouble. Now we’re always up for a fun party thinly veiled as a meaningful charity cause, but this a dance party that can directly affect the opposition’s cause — it’s like Footloose, really. Maybe we can call it Fagloose.

yeah the WBC hates gay people but they loooove equal rights. look at interviews, the WBC is anti-prop 8. they don’t like gay people they don’t want us around but the fact is they support our legal right to marriage and our right to make our point of view heard. we all know the WBC’s doctrine, but watch some interviews with them and you’ll see they will never actually say we’re not entitled to equal rights or free speech. in several interviews shirley phelps herself says that she supports our freedoms and equal rights she just thinks we’re all going for hell especially because we don’t consider homosexuality a sin. you should take a little while looking her up on youtube you will learn a lot you’ll still hate them but you’ll learn.
Wait a minute; you’re wrong. The WBC is a fringe religious group with Calvinist doctrine. They don’t believe gays should be able to get married; they believe homosexuality should be a capital offense. They believe the country is doomed because we allow homosexuality and even condone it.

Vienna you are totally correct and further more if you actually do the research on them tho they…well we all know how they feel about gay people BUT they also believe that in this country we have rights and freedoms and actually even support gay marriage, religion/beliefs aside they are very smart and very fair and do believe that we should all have the same rights and freedoms in this country. again i would never want to side with them with the hurt and torment they have caused to countless people and the funerals they have disrupted and how horrible they have been in many ways that i disagree with but not all of the views they hold as people are bad
See; here’s the thing. Freedom of Speech protects everyone, even militias. So long as you’re not being violent or committing treason, you can protest. So while I don’t agree with their message, I appreciate that I can live in a country where people have the freedom to protest. As an aside; I think everyone should check out the documentary called “The Most Hated Family In America” by Louis Theroux. I own it, but I believe it’s on Youtube. It sheds a lot of light into the WBC movement.

The Phelps mob tried to protest a funeral for three fire victims at a midwest college, and got shut down. They slinked away like the cowards they are. In some locales, the police withdraw and leave these sickos without protection, and they flee immediately, of course.
Using social networks like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, they are being shouted down everywhere they go.
The best part about their schedule is that they think they will make it from East Providence High School to Thayer Street (and find parking) in a matter of 15 minutes. That alone shows what a group of dipshits they are.

The best way to protest this group is by ignoring them completely. They want you to protest, make a scene, and get free media coverage.

Ok, so when they came out to Central Pennsylvania to picket at York High School’s production of the Laramie Project (which, yes, I saw) it only raised eyebrows because they were at a frikkin’ high school. And they had a sign which said “You Will Eat Your Babies” but, y’know, that was just a side note. They’re not overly fond of the gays here anyways.
In RI, however, that’s almost completely the opposite. On the one hand, I am shocked it took them this long to go there. On the other hand, maybe it was survival instincts they’ve somehow lost.
I am going to say this though: I think the best response to these hate mongers is to completely ignore them. They’re not actually about protesting or hating or anything like that — they’re attention whores of the vilest kind. Honestly, the best thing that can be done is to — beforehand — urge all local sources of media to ignore them completely, and day of act as if they aren’t there.
Sure, they’re offensive, but if they don’t get any attention what-so-ever out of it, that’s hitting them where it hurts.
so… serious question. while I think this is a truly fantastic idea (the gay dancing… not the god hates fag group), i am assuming they got a permit or right to protest.
