frozen gorillas
Ok, so we all know that Providence isn’t the most happening city ever, especially in the winter, but when the one and only covert Gay Guerilla operation in Providence is left to lapse into inactivity, it’s just lame — considering minimal operating costs, and it doesn’t take much time to think of someplace to tell people to go. Their Facebook Group page explains:
“As we begin a new year and look forward to shaping 2009, Guerrilla Gay Bar Providence will be going on a hiatus of sorts- into hibernation if you will.”
Sounds like a lack of effort to us. Besides, gorillas don’t fucking hibernate — they die in ditches next to Mirabar. Gay!
Anyway, we thought that it started tonight, but according to Myspace, world renouned DJ Johnny Vicious takes up a weekly residency at Monet Wednesday nights starting next week. Wait, what? The same Johnny Vicious that tours the world performing for thousands is going to come to Providence Wednesday nights that the location doesn’t even acknowledge being open? We would love it if this happened, we’ll even skip Retro night at Mirabar to go see this once or twice! Can we for real Gay Guerilla Monet Wednesday night? Oh yeah, we forgot. No.

From what I understand, the concept of Guerrilla Gay Bar does not lie within the idea of trying to “shock people.”
I will agree that it has become somewhat outdated, but its in part a way to continue a movement towards equality.
Its more about not being pigeon-holed as a gay person into “having to” or “forced into” going to the same lame and stereotypical gay bars.
Its a way for those people who are gay and gay-friendly to live outside an otherwise expected culture, its about doing something different and possibly gives someone the chance who doesn’t like the gay clubs OR who isn’t entirely out yet, to enjoy themselves in another environment.
Not every gay likes to go out amongst the “fairies” (such as Mirabar) nor has any of the Guerrilla Bars I’ve attended been about “causing a scene.” In fact its the complete opposite of that- Go to Boston Guerrilla and you’ll see a complete spectacle for sure.
Besides, I’m told that the person who runs the Guerrilla Gay Bar has moved out of state and now lives in New York…
This is the issue with Providence and the lack of a decent nightlife- people, bar owners, staff, and community do not think out side of the box. They horde the community- because they know they can and because the community lets them.
I feel like Gay Guerilla is out of date. At least irrelevent in our part of the country. On any given night there are at least some gays in every club, bar, lounge. Nearly everyone has gay friends. I feel like gay guerilla is, “Are you shocked?? Have I shocked you now??” And the response seems to be.. ‘my best friends gay, I’m cool with it’. And such events only bring out the fairy with the umbrella standing on the table making a scene.. i.e. paragon’s guerilla episode.
